The European Stag Beetle 🪲📸 Just got a thrilling text from a friend about an incredibly rare find - the European stag beetle Lucanus cervus in our area here in Sweden! Needless to say, I headed directly there to take some photos! These magnificent creatures, as far as I can see from the “Species Portal”, have not been recorded in this particular area in the last 25 years! The European stag beetle is the largest terrestrial beetle in Europe, and spotting one is a sign of a healthy ecosystem. This magnificent creature, with its impressive mandibles, is not only a sight to behold but also a reminder of the wonders of nature that exist right on our doorstep. Watching them transform into adults, pair up, and lay eggs was an amazing experience. Now, those eggs have hatched, and I have 12 new larvae growing rapidly.
